After another day of exploring we ended the day by heading to the Golden Thai Restaurant at Batu Ferringhi (www.goldenthai.com.my/seafood) for Colin’s 70th Birthday celebration.
This place is definitely set up for the tourist dollar but nonetheless it was a fun night. It is a huge semi-open restaurant with a retractable roof right on the beachfront at BF. The sunset was stunning and while the black monkeys played on the power lines across the road Julie hurried to cover the elephants immodesty.
When you arrive at the front you head down the side of the property only to be confronted by metres and metres of tiered fish tanks. The tanks are all stocked with different seafoods and there and then you are asked for your order. We were not ready for this so quick so we hurriedly pointed out a few treats and how we wanted them cooked and the lady started collecting our meal. By collecting our meal I mean she literally netted out 5 of the biggest prawns you have ever seen (2 to be grilled plain, 3 to be grilled with garlic butter). These were weighed and added to our bill. She then netted a ‘sea bass’ (we call these barramundi) of decent proportions which similarly was weighed up. We asked to have this fried and presented in a sweet & sour sauce. This was put on the bill. Next was calamari (deep fried), mixed sautéed vegetables and a huge plate of fried rice.
Once this was ordered and tallied up, then we were shown to our table. We weren’t exactly in a great spot to see the show so we shifted ourselves to front row, left of stage. As the food arrived we realised just how much we had ordered. What a feast. Washed down with ice cold Tiger beer this was definitely a banquet.
Not long after we finished eating there was a local dance troupe who performed several ‘traditional dances’ before calling up customers on to the stage. Straight away one of the male dancers pointed at Colin and called up the birthday boy. After much persuasion (not) Colin was up on stage dancing away with the troupe.
When the show finished another group of customers who were there having a fund raising dinner for an orphanage thanked us for our contributions and then away we went out on the street to look at the BF night markets.
It was only minutes after we started our ice creams that our taxis turned up to whisk us back to our unit where around midnight we all were ready to crash. (Personally I think the 4 ‘oldies’ did well to be out of bed so late!)
So that was Colin’s 70th over and done and we all had smiles a mile wide.
Chat tomorrow (if I wake up).
