Romero Britto

(an extract from SmArt Investor, May 2014)

Romero Britto (pronounced, “Breeto) creates a completely new expression that reflects his optimistic faith in the world around him. Eileen Guggenheim wrote it best when stating, “Chagall’s floating lovers seem to foreshadow so many of Britto’s buoyant exultant couples.” Alluding to influences of early and modern masters, Britto’s pulsating colours, pop themes and commanding compositions have led him to become the premier contemporary artist of his generation.  Romero Britto lived an extremely modest lifestyle while growing up amongst eight brothers and sisters in Recife, Brazil. However, his innate creativity allowed Britto to fill his life with vibrant color and images of a beautiful world.  His canvas was any scrap of newspaper or cardboard he could find. Romero Britto today is represented in galleries and museums across five continents. Opening in Paris at the Carrousel du Louvre, Salon de la Societe National des Beaux Arts in December 2008, Britto unveiled “Journey” to hundreds of guests. Other unique artistic endeavors have flourished. “…Matisse channeling Picasso,” wrote the New York Times when Britto created a living canvas  performed by the Cirque du Soleil in celebration of SuperBowl XLI. Romero Britto artwork on canvas have found the spotlight in numerous corporate commissions and noted art collections. Over 20 cities have Britto sculpture as permanent installations, and Britto is the first artist to display a monumental sculpture in Hyde Park, London.

Sir Peter Blake

The Godfather of British Pop Art (an extract from SmArt Investor, July 2014)

“Blake is the founding father of Pop Art: his Captain Webb matchbox preceded Andy Warhol’s Brillo Pad boxes and Campbell’s soup cans, and he was painting comics before Roy Lichenstein, and flags and targets before Jasper Johns”. -The Daily Telegraph 25th July 2010.

Blake was born in Dartford, Kent in 1932 and studied initially at Gravesend Technical College from 1949-51. A true Grandee of British Art, Sir Peter was knighted in 2002, and presented with an honorary doctorate of the Royal College of Art. His work is represented in major collections throughout the world. Reverently referred to as the Godfather of British Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake is regarded as a true icon of the global art scene, producing spectacular original works that effortlessly transcend all generational divides. He is respected and admired as the quintessential British ‘Pop-Artist’; and from the 1950’s to the present day, his instantly recognisable motifs and signature style have become an indelible part of Global ‘Pop Culture’. With classics such as his 1961 ‘Target’ and his ground-breaking Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover lighting the way in the British Pop-Art revolution, Sir Peter’s panache and unique style will never be repeated. He continues to be a constant inspiration to the new generation of ‘Blue Chip’ British artists such as Damien Hirst, Gavin Turk and Tracey Emin, and has earned his place alongside Henry Moore and William Turner as one of history’s most innovative and inimitable British Masters.
