Having left Oklahoma, where the winds come sweeping down the plains, (God I wish I could get that song out of my head) we ventured on into the Lone Star State, Texas.  The first thing we came across was a big information centre with a tribute to soldiers from WWII erected outside.  What I intend to do with this blog post is to show you some of the Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) scenery before blogging what we actually did in DFW.

After a break and collecting a bucket load of tourist information books we carried on to our RV park at Loyd Lake midway between Dallas and Fort Worth.  The Loyd Lake RV Park is owned by the City of Greater Prairie and is sadly not being used to its full potential due to underfunding by the city.  This caused me to email the mayor to complain after we both had icy cold showers in literally freezing conditions in 2nd rate facilities.  Apparently I hit a nerve because I had a reply from the mayor himself apologising within the hour and by next morning the staff were all over us with offers of compensation.  We weren’t after a refund as we knew the site isn’t what is called “Full Hook Up” (meaning we had no sewerage connection & had to use their showers but nowhere did it say the showers would be cold) but what they did do was give us the keys to a well furnished 2 bedroom unit to use as we saw fit.  We only used it for showers but could have used it to stay in if we wanted.  This made up for the poor facilities and we were happy to stay where we were just metres from the lake front.  Wildlife abounds this park as well despite it being on the city fringe.  We saw 2 skunks (1 pictured) and a possum but armadillos, bobcats and the profuse smattering of squirrels made it a nice stay.  Summer here would be glorious.

Following the picture of the skunk I have included 8 pictures in Fort Worth.  The first two will blow you away when you hear that houses like these are available from $300,000.  Both Fort Worth and Dallas like to light up their night time cityscape (you’ll see the latter at the end of the gallery).  In the photos after the FW night shots we see where we entered Dallas where the I35 crosses a bridge to enter the city.  You can then see the dramatic skyline that is Dallas.

On one particular day we went into the city to look about and take the ride to the top of Reunion Tower and the geodesic dome that surrounds it. From this vantage point you get the best view of Dallas there is.  You may notice that in one photo I have put a red rectangle over a section of road and a building.  That is where Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated JFK in 1963 and no doubt changed world history.  My next blog will elaborate on that when I tell you of our trip to the Dallas Book Depository (the building in the top of the red rectangle). As you scan through the photos you’ll see Dallas’ efforts to light up their night sky.  Quite effective really.

As I said this is a short blog.  I am almost finished sorting photos of the extremely interesting Texas Book Depository and the rodeo at Fort Worth.  But for now I’ll get this blog posted and try to get the next out in a few days so keep checking on us.

Cheers for now,

Garry & Shane.
